“In a recent study” means “In my opinion”

Ronald Reagan popularized the Russian proverb “trust but verify”. He used it all the time while discussing US/Russia international relations.

The proverb has use beyond politics. In this age of fake news, we must avoid confirmation bias and instead seek out the truth by verifying claims.

Below is an ongoing list of websites that use a permutation of “In a recent study” without 1)linking to the study or 2)giving the name of the study.

I do not believe the claims made below are fake. Only that the writer is making a fundamental error in communicating their beliefs. If you find more examples, please comment below and I’ll add to the list.

Alhambradental.com — taken 8/3/17
Colgate.com — taken 8/9/17 (there is a real study behind this claim but no link to it or name of study present)
